Discover 5 Hidden Gems in Taal, Batangas You Must Visit!

Taal, Batangas is a special place full of history, culture, and charm. It’s the last stop on GMA Integrated News’ “Summer Past-yalan” series, and it’s a destination you definitely don’t want to miss! Here’s why Taal is so unique:

Taal is called the Heritage Town of Batangas because it has many old houses and buildings that are preserved and protected. These houses are part of the town’s history and culture, some of them were homes to important people during the Spanish era. In fact, Taal is so important that a special law called the Taal Heritage Preservation Code was created to keep these old buildings safe from being destroyed or changed. A tourism officer, Atty. Maria Carlota Cerdeña, explained that while the town is growing and changing with modern times, they make sure the old structures are still protected.

Here are 5 awesome places to visit in Taal:

  1. Museo nina Leon at Galicano Apacible Taal has over 100 old houses, and one of the most famous is the house of Don Leon Apacible. He was an important lawyer who worked with General Miguel Malvar during the Spanish time. The house has some very special items, like the “ante sala” (a waiting room) and an “Aparador de Tres Lunas,” a huge cabinet that shows the family’s wealth. It’s so big that it takes 20-30 people to lift it!

  2. Museo nina Marcela Mariño at Felipe Agoncillo This museum is inside the home of Marcela Mariño Agoncillo, who is known as the “Mother of the Philippine Flag.” She and her husband Felipe Agoncillo, the first Filipino diplomat, had a very interesting house. It even had a secret peephole that allowed them to see who was coming inside through a small hole in the floor!

  3. Galleria Taal If you like cameras, Galleria Taal is the place for you! The museum has more than 200 vintage cameras, and they all still work! It’s a fun way to see how different cameras were in the past compared to the smartphones and digital cameras we use today.

  4. Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Caysasay The church here is very special because it’s the only church in Luzon built with coral stones. The walls are so thick that the church stays cool inside, even on hot days. The shrine is dedicated to Our Lady of Caysasay, and people believe her image is miraculous.

  5. Tapang Taal Don’t leave Taal without trying its famous Tapang Taal! This delicious dish is known for being super soft and flavorful. You can also buy other local souvenirs like the famous balisong (butterfly knife) and beautiful embroidered clothes.

Taal is a place where you can learn about Filipino history, enjoy delicious food, and see amazing old buildings. It’s definitely a place to add to your travel list!
