A super strong Magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, shaking the ground so hard that it caused tsunami alerts in different parts of the world. 🌊😱
But here’s the good news from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA):
No Filipinos were hurt. 🙏🇵🇭
The Ground Shook, and the Ocean Stirred
After the earthquake, there were tsunami alerts in several places:
-
Eastern coast of Russia
-
Kamchatka Peninsula
-
Hawaii
-
New Zealand
-
West coast of the United States
DFA Assistant Secretary Robert Ferrer said that Filipinos in those areas were told to be careful and follow safety instructions.
Filipinos in the Danger Zone
The most dangerous area hit by the tsunami was the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, which is very close to the Pacific Ocean. 🌏
There are 7 Filipinos living there.
Right after the earthquake, the Philippine Embassy in Moscow reached out to them to check if they were okay.
“Thankfully, none of them were hurt or killed,” said Ferrer. “But it was really scary.”
Tsunami Alerts Lowered—But the Scare Was Real
At first, everyone was worried. Giant waves could have hit the shores anytime. 🌊🚨
But soon after, the tsunami warnings were lowered, meaning the danger had passed. Still, it reminded everyone just how fast things can change after a big quake.
Philippines Was Also on High Alert
Back home, the PHIVOLCS (that’s the team who watches out for earthquakes and volcanoes in the Philippines) gave tsunami warnings too — especially in over 20 coastal provinces along the eastern part of the country, the side that faces the Pacific Ocean.
But just like in Russia, the alert was lifted later on because no unusual sea level changes were seen.
The DFA’s Important Reminder
The DFA is asking all Filipinos living abroad, especially in places near oceans, to listen to the advice of the Philippine embassies in their area. Because when something big like this happens, time matters.
A Close Call for Many—But No Lives Lost
Thanks to fast communication and emergency warnings, no Filipino was harmed in this powerful quake and possible tsunami. But the fear was real, and everyone is reminded to stay alert and be prepared.
