‘Dengvaxia victim’ dies after suffering for 8 years

MANILA, Philippines — A 19-year-old male from Cebu province was the latest addition to the over a hundred students believed to have died after they were given shots of the banned anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia.

According to the Samahan ng mga Magulang ang mga Anak ay Biktima ng Dengvaxia (SMABD), the latest fatality was identified as Enrico Miguel Cardenas, who was just 11 when he got a dose of the vaccine at Dakit Elementary School in Barili town.

SMABD president Sumachen Dominguez, whose child is also a survivor but is continuously under monitoring and medication, said Enrico’s parents – Erick and Miguela Cardenas – informed her on Tuesday about the death of their son on Sept. 7, 2025.

Medical reports showed that the victim suffered a stroke initially due to a blood clot in the brain.

Belonging to a poor family, Cardenas’ parents, according to Dominguez, were furious over what happened to their child as they slammed the Department of Health in the province for ignoring their pleas for help, at least, for medications.

Former Health secretary and now Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin is the principal respondent in the reckless imprudence resulting in homicide case filed against by the parents and relatives of children who died.
