The Hague, Netherlands—Around 200 Filipinos from different countries gathered on “Convergence Day” to demand the release of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over alleged crimes against humanity linked to his war on drugs.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion as Duterte’s loyal supporters waved banners, chanted prayers, and stood in solidarity for their former leader.
Among those present was his former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, who voiced strong words not only for Duterte’s freedom but also against the current administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
“Tatlo ang panawagan,” Roque declared.
“Una, palayain si Tatay Digong. Pangalawa, mag-resign si BBM Marcos dahil sa lantarang korapsyon. Pangatlo, panahon na ng tunay na pagbabago—at dapat hayaan na si Vice President Sara Duterte.”
Roque stressed that Duterte, now 80 years old, is no longer strong enough to face the grueling trial, and called the charges unfair.
Also present at the gathering was Duterte’s ex-wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman, who had visited him earlier in detention. She reassured supporters about his condition:
“Okay man siya. Fit pa rin, healthy. Do not worry—may doctor at nurse na laging nagbabantay sa kanya.”
Zimmerman expressed gratitude for the continued support:
“Thank you to all Filipinos worldwide who have stood by us since March 23. Your undying love for Rodrigo is overwhelming.”
Duterte, who has publicly accepted legal responsibility for his war on drugs, was transferred to The Hague in March. Police records estimate around 6,000 deaths under the campaign, but human rights groups claim the toll could be as high as 30,000, including vigilante-style killings.
For his supporters, however, Duterte remains a father figure—“Tatay Digong”—who fought relentlessly against drugs, and whose fate now rests in international hands.
