Comelec: No re-registration needed for voters in Makati-Taguig transfer

Voters who are affected the transfer of some barangays from Makati to Taguig do not need to register again with the Commission on Elections (Comelec), poll body chairman George Garcia said Thursday.

“No need to re-register,” Garcia told GMA News Online when asked how the move, reaffirmed by the Supreme Court’s recent decision, will affect the upcoming 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.

Garcia said that the voters from the barangays formerly declared as part of Makati City will be automatically transferred to Taguig City.

“Kung sakali po ay walang problema naman kasi automatically transferred lahat [sila] sa Taguig. Ilipat lang po namin ang database,” he said.

(There will be no problem because they are automatically transferred to Taguig. We will just transfer the database.)

In June, the SC rejected the Makati City government’s motion asking the high court to allow it to file a second motion for reconsideration over its territorial dispute with Taguig City.

This is in connection to a 2021 SC decision declaring that the Fort Bonifacio Military Reservation, consisting of parcels 3 and 4, psu-2031, and the ten affected barangays are part of the territory of Taguig City.

The High Court in September 2022 denied Makati’s motion for reconsideration assailing the 2021 decision. — BM, GMA Integrated News
