A big decision has been made about who really won in the 6th District of Manila.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Manila said that Benny Abante will finally be proclaimed as the true winner of the race for congressman. This will happen on Tuesday, July 8, at 9 a.m. inside the Comelec office in Ermita, Manila.
But here’s where the drama starts…
Joey Chua, who was first announced as the winner, got disqualified. That means he can no longer be the congressman. Why? Because the Comelec said that Joey Chua’s certificate of candidacy was not valid. It’s like signing up for a race but not following all the rules — so you get kicked out even if you crossed the finish line.
Joey Chua tried to fight back by filing a motion for reconsideration (like asking them to change their minds). But the Comelec already decided on June 18 that his candidacy was void. Then, the Supreme Court had five days to stop this decision by issuing something called a TRO (Temporary Restraining Order).
But guess what?
The Supreme Court didn’t stop it.
So the Comelec’s ruling became final and official. No more changes.
Because of this, the Comelec is now ready to name Benny Abante as the real winner. They already sent out a meeting notice to gather everyone involved. After that, they will announce Abante as the new congressman for the 6th District of Manila.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia explained that this is the proper process. First, the election board must meet, then they will send out a final notice to proclaim the new winner.
So, after weeks of tension and legal fights, Benny Abante will finally get his moment — and Manila’s 6th District will soon have its officially recognized representative.
