Classes in Manila to continue despite transport strike

MANILA, Philippines — Manila City Mayor “Isko Moreno” Domagoso announced on Wednesday that classes in the city, whether face-to-face or online, will continue until Sept. 19, Friday, despite the ongoing transport strike.

“Yes, classes will continue. It cannot be held hostage. Life must go on,” the mayor said, noting that the city will adopt a “maximum tolerance” policy during the demonstration period.

The mayor also said the city will provide assistance to protesters and the police. “We will offer our help. We’ll announce it soon,” he said, noting the aid is intended “for everyone.”

He appealed to protesters to avoid destroying or vandalizing public property, as the city will eventually shoulder the cost to fix them.

“All we ask is that they avoid vandalism. They can hang up (placards), it is okay,” he said.
