Cities back Marcos on LGU project oversight

MANILA, Philippines — The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) backed President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order to restore the requirement for local government units (LGUs) to accept completed national projects.

The group said the directive would strengthen transparency and help eliminate inefficiencies in the implementation of government infrastructure programs.

It stressed that the acceptance process would prevent so-called “ghost projects,” which wasted public funds and undermined public trust.

According to the LCP, the reinstated policy would allow cities to exercise clearer oversight of project progress and completion within their jurisdictions.

The league said that access to verified information on completed projects was crucial for local development planning.

“This policy affirms the President’s trust and confidence in LGUs as genuine partners in governance and as frontliners in ensuring accountability,” the group said in a statement on Friday.

It added that the new directive underscores the critical role of cities in monitoring and reporting on infrastructure projects across the country.

The league said it was ready to collaborate with national agencies to guarantee that infrastructure initiatives served the public as intended.

LCP also pledged to translate the President’s renewed trust into concrete results that uplift the lives of city residents.

“We will work tirelessly to ensure the transparent and effective implementation of this policy for the benefit of every Filipino,” it added.
