These popular platforms now have just 24 hours to establish local offices or appoint representatives in the Philippines. Why? Because recent school shooting incidents have highlighted the pressing need for better coordination with digital spaces where our children interact.

In letters sent on September 21, CICC Executive Director Renato Paraiso emphasized, “We are not asking platforms to police the internet for the government. We just want them to be reachable and responsive when their platforms pose risks to Filipino children.” His words resonate deeply—when an online threat crosses over into real-life violence, it’s crucial to have clear channels in place for authorities to take action.
This call to action comes in response to serious concerns about how online platforms can sometimes serve as breeding grounds for violent extremism and exploitation. These worries have especially intensified following the heart-wrenching shooting at Banga National High School in South Cotabato on September 18.
Expectations for Reddit and Discord
The CICC is asking Reddit and Discord to provide detailed explanations of their current safety arrangements and potential plans to enhance standards for protecting users. This includes strategies for rapid responses, improved age-verification processes, and a commitment to combat online sexual abuse and exploitation of children.
Moreover, the agency is reaching out to various platforms, including Meta and Roblox, to foster a government-led initiative aimed at addressing online threats, particularly those linked to violence and child exploitation. The goal is clear: a united front against the dangers lurking in digital spaces.
Consequences of Non-compliance
Time is of the essence. If Reddit and Discord fail to comply with these directives, the CICC has warned that they may face restrictions in their operations within the country. It’s a tough stance, but one that reflects the urgency of the situation.
Recent investigations have unveiled alarming trends involving the online grooming and recruitment of minors by communities tied to nihilistic violent extremism.
