Remembering Tatay Maning: A Legacy of Love and Faith
In a heartfelt announcement that has touched many, former Archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, recently shared the news of his father’s passing. Manuel Tagle Sr., affectionately known as “Tatay Maning,” left this world at the age of 96, on a serene Sunday morning at 7:09 a.m. Manila time. His departure marks the end of a long journey filled with love, family, and devotion.
Cardinal Tagle, who now serves as pro-prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, took a moment to reflect on his father’s incredible life. “We thank God for his life and mission,” he said, his words resonating with gratitude and affection. “Please pray for his eternal joy with God.” The warmth of his message invites everyone to cherish the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to family and faith.
Tatay Maning was married to Milagros Gokim for an inspiring 70 years. Together, they nurtured their two sons, Luis Antonio and Manuel Jr., in Imus, Cavite, just south of Manila. Their love story, rich with shared experiences and unwavering support for one another, serves as a beacon of hope and resilience.
As the community mourns, the diocese of Imus has announced arrangements for Tatay Maning’s wake and viewing. It will take place at Casas Hall in the Bishop’s House on Monday, September 7, from 4 to 10 p.m., and will continue on September 8 and 9, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friends and loved ones are invited to come together to share memories and honor this remarkable man. The funeral Mass will be held on September 10 at 10 a.m. at Imus Cathedral.
The Archdiocese of Manila expressed “profound sadness” over the loss, encouraging all to pray for Tatay Maning’s soul and for the Tagle family during this difficult time. In a beautiful gesture of compassion, the Tagle family has requested that, instead of flowers, cash donations be made to aid the victims of the devastating flash floods in Nepal. This act reflects the values that Tatay Maning lived by—a life dedicated not only to family but to the greater community.
