BSP: PH Inflation to Ease Slowly, Upside Risks Persist

Easing Inflation: A Gradual Path Forward

In a recent briefing, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Eli Remolona Jr. shared a cautious yet hopeful outlook on the country’s inflation. Taking place as the House of Representatives begins discussions on the proposed P7.2 trillion national budget for the upcoming year, the message came at a critical moment.

A Gradual Easing Ahead

Governor Remolona emphasized that, over the medium term, inflation is expected to gradually ease. “While we foresee some positive trends,” he noted, “we must remain vigilant. Risks are still leaning towards the upside.”

This caution reflects the complexities of the current economic landscape—filled with uncertainties that could affect the direction of prices.

Upcoming Decisions

Amid these discussions, the BSP’s monetary board is scheduled to meet on August 27. As they prepare to review the latest data, Remolona assured citizens, “We will analyze all evidence available. We’re ready to take the necessary steps to ensure that inflation moves back towards our target.”

Current Trends

The news brings a glimmer of hope. In July 2026, the inflation rate continued its downward trend, recording a decline for the third consecutive month. Yet, it remains stubbornly high at 6.4%, well above the government’s preferred range of 2% to 4%.

“This elevation in inflation is largely influenced by global supply shocks and their ripple effects on local pricing,” Remolona explained, pointing to the challenges that lie ahead.

Looking Forward

Despite the current challenges, the BSP forecasts a positive outlook for the future. By 2028, they anticipate inflation will ease to around 3.1%. BSP Deputy Governor Zeno Abenoja provided further insight, stating, “We see an average inflation of 6.4% in 2026, followed by 4.5% in 2027. Both figures exceed our target of 3%, but we are hopeful for improvements by 2028.”

However, he warned of potential hurdles. “The risks of inflation remain high, particularly due to climbing global oil prices and rising inflation expectations.”

In Closing

As conversations surrounding the national budget heat up, the nation awaits the BSP’s upcoming decisions with bated breath. There is a mix of hope and caution, as both the government and citizens navigate these turbulent economic times. As we look ahead, the path may be gradual, but every step counts towards achieving the stability we all seek.
