Urgent Announcement: Rotational Brownouts Coming to the Visayas
On Thursday, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) raised some serious alarms for residents in the Visayas. With power reserves running low, they announced the implementation of rotational brownouts across the region. This news hit hard, as many are already feeling the strain of everyday life without reliable electricity.
What’s Happening?
The NGCP has declared both red and yellow alerts for the Visayas power grid. This means that from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., residents in various areas may experience power interruptions. The goal? To protect the integrity of the power system and prevent a total blackout. Here are the areas affected:
– VECO
– MECO
– CEBECO I, II, III
– NEPC
– NOCECO I, II
– NONECO
– MORE
– AKELCO
– ANTECO
– CAPELCO
– ILECO I, II, III
– GUIMELCO
– LEYECO II, III, IV, V
– SOLECO
– DORELCO
– ESAMELCO
– BILECO
– NORSAMELCO
– SAMELCO I, II
– BLCI
– BOHECO I, II
Why Is This Happening?
The situation is critical. The Visayas grid is currently running on a razor-thin margin. With an available capacity of just 2,377 megawatts (MW), the demand peaks at 2,552 MW. The math isn’t adding up. In fact, as of now, 12 plants are on forced outages, some since back in 2021! To add to the woes, several are operating at significantly reduced capacities, totaling 902.7 MW that simply isn’t available for the grid.
Understanding Alerts
When NGCP issues a red alert, it signifies that the power supply is insufficient to meet the growing demand. This situation places a tremendous strain on the transmission grid. Meanwhile, a yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is too tight to effectively handle any sudden issues.
What Can You Do?
As residents brace for these brownouts, it’s essential to prepare. Consider stocking up on essential supplies, planning your activities around power schedule, and finding ways to keep cool and stay safe during outages.
This is a trying time for everyone in the Visayas. Stay informed, stay safe, and support one another as we navigate these power challenges together. Let’s hope for a swift resolution so we can all enjoy the electricity we depend on in our daily lives.
