Barzaga faces ethics complaint

MANILA, Philippines — The National Unity Party (NUP) on Monday expressed intent to file an ethics complaint against Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga.

“By weaponizing his official platform to denigrate the government, Rep. Barzaga betrayed the dignity of his office and further diminished the institution that he himself is a part of,” the NUP, chaired by Rep. Ronaldo Puno, said in a statement.

Puno showed reporters Barzaga’s posts on social media.

In one post, Barzaga, a former NUP member,  said “Don’t burn the House of Representatives tomorrow, I have a privilege speech on Wednesday.”

Puno said Barzaga announced on Monday his intention to run for speaker.

“Earlier at noon, he went into the office of the majority leader,” Puno said in Filipino and English in a press conference at the House of Representatives, referring to the office of Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos.

“So, of course, everybody was surprised. No one reacted much. The majority leader, of course, the gentleman that he is, just let him be,” Puno said.

“I just came from the plenary, he is going around now, he’s campaigning to be speaker,” he added.
