Filipino billiards icon Efren “Bata” Reyes fell short again in his quest for the elusive Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medal.
Reyes lost to Vietnam’s Dinh Nai Ngo in one-cushion carom, 100-14, Friday at the Manila Hotel.
One-cushion carom is a popular form of billiards. The objective of the game is to carom (a stroke in which the cue ball hits two object balls successively) and hit the rail cushions before hitting one object ball. A point is scored for each successful carom.
This is Reyes’ fifth bronze medal in the SEA Games.
Will fans see Reyes in the next regional sports meet which will take place in Vietnam in 2021?
The 65-year-old sports icon said he might venture into the coaching career with his long-time friend and fellow pool legend Francisco “Django” Bustamante.
“Baka coach nalang. Baka coach nalang kami ni pareng Django, hindi ko alam kung lalaro pa kami,” he told the media after his loss.
(Translation: “I might be a coach, together with my good friend Django. I still don’t know if we’ll play.”)
