AFP on Full Red Alert as Protests Erupt Over Corruption

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has been placed on red alert as protests against alleged corruption continue to rise across the country.

“All AFP units are now on red alert status effective September 12, 2025,” AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla announced in a radio interview.

Padilla explained that the move is not meant to alarm the public but to ensure that the military is ready to support the Philippine National Police (PNP) in maintaining peace and order.

“This is a precautionary measure, part of our standard security protocols. The public has nothing to worry about,” she assured.

Under red alert, AFP personnel are placed on standby, leaves are suspended, and units remain fully prepared for any unexpected developments.

The announcement comes as transport group PISTON declared it will join demonstrations over alleged anomalies in flood control projects. Just days earlier, multiple groups gathered in Quezon City to protest what they called the misuse of public funds.

Protests Remain Peaceful

Despite rising tensions, the Philippine National Police reported that recent rallies in Metro Manila were “generally peaceful.”

More than 2,100 police officers and 1,500 standby personnel were deployed to manage traffic and ensure public safety during the demonstrations.

PNP acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. praised the discipline of law enforcers and the cooperation of protesters.

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to every police officer who stood watch with professionalism and compassion. Your respect for human rights reflects the best of our service,” Nartatez said.

He also commended rally organizers and participants for observing protocols, proving that peaceful assembly and dialogue can thrive in a democracy.

Malacañang: President Respects Freedom of Expression

Amid the growing protests, Malacañang emphasized that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. respects the people’s right to free expression.
