Kalayaan Ignites ‘Patriotic Tourism’ in Pag-asa Island!

Discovering Pag-asa Island: A Journey of Beauty and Sovereignty

A View That Never Grows Old

Imagine a place where powdery white sand hugs the shoreline, meeting crystal-clear waters that shift from light blue to deep sapphire hues. The sky above, free from pollution, bursts into fiery shades of red and gold as the sun sets, fading into a night so dark and pristine that the stars seem close enough to touch. This is Pag-asa Island—a serene escape where nature’s beauty and silence wrap around you like a warm embrace.

In March 2023, I was fortunate to be among the first tourists invited to explore the Kalayaan Islands, a trip blending the excitement of travel with a deeper sense of responsibility. We journeyed through several islands, marveling at the thriving marine ecosystems near Likas Island and encountering Lawak, alive with thousands of seabirds calling the skies home.

Capturing the Night Sky

Having visited Pag-asa several times before as a journalist, I often found myself captivated by its enchanting beauty. During one visit, I set up my camera to capture a time-lapse of the night sky. Slowly, the edge of the Milky Way revealed itself—a breathtaking display that encapsulated the isolation and wonder of Pag-asa. Yet, even amidst this beauty, a stark reminder lingered; I noticed a faint streak crossing my frame—an anomaly at first, but soon explained by military personnel. Drones from the artificial island on Subi Reef, just 20 kilometers away, frequently hovered above Pag-asa, drawing attention to the island’s geopolitical reality.

A Closer Look at Sovereignty

By day, that scrutiny is unmistakable. On clear mornings, you can see the massive structures on Subi Reef looming in the distance—a jarring sight for those who visit with a sense of patriotism. For visitors, the view might spark feelings of pride and concern; the island is at the forefront of sovereignty issues in the South China Sea. The horizon often reveals over 20 Chinese maritime militia vessels, and close by, the Chinese Coast Guard and PLA Navy warships glide across the water—a constant reminder of the complex dynamics at play.

This isn’t your typical tourist destination. As the Municipality of Kalayaan prepares to relaunch its tourism program, it embraces a new identity: “patriotic tourism.” Selected tourists can now visit Pag-asa free of charge, paying only for accommodation and meals.

Vice Mayor Maurice Phillip Albayda emphasizes, “We hope to awaken patriotism in every Filipino who sets foot on Pag-asa.” The intention is clear: to deepen the public’s understanding of the island’s significance and foster a connection with the nation’s maritime frontiers.

Building a Future Together

Efforts to transform Pag-asa into a self-sustaining community are also underway. Soon, the Philippine Coast Guard and the Archdiocese of Palawan will break ground on the island’s first Catholic church—a monumental step in fostering community spirit. Alongside this, there are plans for a high school, a new health facility, and an ice processing plant to support local fishermen, ensuring their catches are preserved and sold effectively.

Recently, Pag-asa has drawn increased attention from national leaders. Senators Risa Hontiveros and Win Gatchalian have visited, emphasizing the importance of the island and its people. Senator Gatchalian highlighted, “The island carries the weight of sovereignty for our entire nation.” His words resonate deeply amidst the scenic backdrop, a reminder that those living on Pag-asa prove there are Filipinos proudly calling it home.

A Unique Experience Awaits

For those fortunate enough to experience Pag-asa, its contrast is striking. One moment, you’re enveloped by untouched beauty—coral reefs, seabirds, and an endless horizon. The next, you’re starkly aware of the geopolitical tensions woven into the fabric of everyday life on this island.

This duality of the breathtaking natural environment and the harsh realities of sovereignty is what makes Pag-asa Island truly extraordinary. As Kalayaan opens its doors to a new wave of visitors embracing “patriotic tourism,” it offers not just a journey to one of the country’s most remote communities but an opportunity to reflect on what it means to stand on the frontlines of the Philippines’ territory.

Welcome to Pag-asa Island—a place where beauty meets purpose, inviting you to see, understand, and connect at the very heart of our nation’s sovereignty.
