Protect Impeachment Evidence After Senate Hack, House Urges!

Impeachment Proceedings Under Scrutiny: A Call for Safety and Security

In a dramatic turn of events, the House Prosecution Panel is urging the Senate and various government entities to prioritize the safety and security of critical evidence for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. This appeal comes on the heels of a cybersecurity breach and a heightened security threat against the Senate, leaving many on edge.

On Thursday, the anxiety heightened when a group publicly admitted to hacking the Senate’s official website. Just days before, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) warned of a security risk targeting the Senate building itself. This unsettling backdrop has cast a shadow over the upcoming impeachment process.

“We’re in a precarious situation,” said House lead impeachment prosecutor Rep. Gerville Luistro during a recent press conference. “While it’s difficult to draw a direct line to the impeachment trial, we have a crucial schedule ahead—our first pre-trial conference is set for June 18, just this Thursday.”

Her tone was serious, yet filled with urgency. “I’m deeply concerned about the safety of everyone involved—the legal teams, the senators, and even the officials and staff present in the Senate building,” Luistro emphasized.

The stakes are undeniably high. “If there’s any connection to the impeachment trial, it heightens our responsibility to ensure this is addressed,” she added. “This isn’t just a legal process; it’s a constitutional matter that impacts every Filipinow, whether at home or abroad.”

Luistro called for immediate action from law enforcement agencies like the NBI, the Department of Justice, and the Philippine National Police. “We need your support to keep our institutions safe,” she urged. “This is a time when every precaution matters.”

The House of Representatives, aware of the rising tensions, is also taking measures to protect its prosecutors and witnesses. “Our leadership has already begun discussions on necessary security protocols,” Luistro shared, reflecting a commitment to safeguarding all involved as they confront the evidence gathered.

Private Prosecutor Atty. Lorna Kapunan chimed in, resonating with Luistro’s fears. “As practitioners of the law, our concerns are very real. We echo our head public prosecutor’s call for measures that secure our documents,” she said, her voice steady but laced with concern.

“This evidence is critical and has already been transmitted to the Senate. It must be protected,” Kapunan stressed. “During the pre-trial, we will officially present our documentary evidence, and it’s crucial that both our people and this evidence are safe.”

With emotions running high and stakes even higher, the calls for security resonate louder than ever. “We trust that the Senate will take the necessary steps—not just for our safety, but for the integrity of the entire impeachment case,” Kapunan concluded.

As this pivotal moment unfolds, the eyes of the nation remain fixed on the events to come. Will the institutions step up to safeguard the sanctity of the process? Only time will tell. But for now, the plea for safety rings clear and strong, echoing the importance of justice in every Filipino’s life.
