Homecoming for the Brave: 38 Filipino Crew Members of MV Hondius Return After Quarantine
In a heartwarming turn of events, 38 Filipino seafarers who bravely faced the challenges aboard the MV Hondius are finally home. After successfully completing their quarantine in the Netherlands, these dedicated crew members landed back in the Philippines, and we couldn’t be happier for them.
Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac shared the exciting news on Saturday, saying, “Our 38 MV Hondius Filseafarers arrived home safely last night from quarantine, thanks to the joint efforts of the Department of Health, the Department of Migrant Workers, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the Bureau of Immigration—under the guidance of President Bongbong Marcos.” It was a collective effort that spanned agencies, showcasing the unity and support from our government.
These courageous individuals underwent quarantine after a few hantavirus cases were reported aboard. But even before their quarantine, they tested negative for the virus, demonstrating the rigorous safety measures in place. It’s a testament to their resilience and the importance of health protocols in today’s world.
However, their return is not just about safety. Secretary Cacdac emphasized that the crew members will continue to receive their salaries throughout the unexpired portions of their contracts. “They will still be safely employed by their shipowner,” he reassured, a gesture that not only provides financial security but also peace of mind.
Hantavirus, which typically spreads from rodents to humans, sparked concern during the crew’s time aboard. Fortunately, the World Health Organization noted that there were no sightings of rats on the ship. This discovery opens up discussions about the possibility of human-to-human transmission, emphasizing the need for vigilance, particularly among those working closely together, such as our seafarers.
These 38 men and women are not just numbers; they are heroes. They have faced uncertainty and challenge with courage, and now, they are back where they belong—with their families, ready to share stories of resilience and hope.
As we celebrate their return, let’s take a moment to appreciate the sacrifices that our seafarers make every day. Their bravery and professionalism shine brightly even in difficult times. Welcome home!
