Tragedy at Riyadh International Airport: Filipinos Among the Wounded
In a shocking incident at Riyadh International Airport in Saudi Arabia, three Filipino workers were injured, leaving their families and communities grappling with anxiety. The news came from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Sunday, sparking an outpouring of concern.
Hans Leo Cacdac, the DMW chief, addressed the nation, saying, “Walang ulat na Pilipino na nasawi,” or “No Filipino fatalities have been reported.” These words provided a glimmer of hope amid the unfolding tragedy. He continued, expressing heartfelt condolences for those who lost their lives in the attack: “Tayo ay nakikiisa at nakikiramay sa mga nasawi na sanhi nung insidente.” (We stand in solidarity with and extend our condolences to those who lost their lives because of this incident.)
Unfortunately, the situation remains dire for the injured. Cacdac informed us that two of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are in intensive care, while a third, although injured, is not. “We are monitoring their situations closely,” he said, his voice filled with empathy. “We’re also reaching out to their families.”
The attack, which marks the deadliest of its kind in over a decade, sees the Iran-backed Houthis escalating their campaign against Saudi Arabia. Cacdac reiterated the commitment of DMW and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration personnel: “We continue to check with local authorities to ensure no other Filipinos were affected. Hari nawa, wala nang Pilipino na nasaktan.” (We hope no more Filipinos were hurt.)
Earlier reports had indicated two Filipinos injured in the attack, but further investigations revealed a total of three who were impacted. This incident is particularly alarming, as it follows two previous attacks at King Khalid International Airport this week, which left four people dead and resulted in significant damage to a parked Saudi commercial plane.
The ongoing violence has raised questions about the vulnerabilities in Saudi defense capabilities, especially as the kingdom intensifies its air campaign against the Houthis. While the Houthis have not yet claimed responsibility for the latest attack, a Saudi-led military coalition has vowed to take action.
In these moments of uncertainty and fear, we remain hopeful and vigilant. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, their families, and all those affected by this tragedy. We wish for the swift recovery of those injured and stand united in solidarity against violence.
